MRI and Scan Prices: China vs Indonesia vs Malaysia vs Singapore
The short answer
Most medical travel sites tell you China is cheap. For some things it is. For others it isn’t.
We compared actual published prices across four countries. Here is the honest summary:
| China | Indonesia | Malaysia | Singapore | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic health checkup | 🟡 Mid | ✅ Cheapest | 🟡 Mid | 🔴 Expensive |
| MRI (single region) | ✅ Cheapest | 🟡 Mid | 🟡 Mid–high | 🔴 Expensive |
| Gastroscopy / colonoscopy | ✅ Cheapest | 🟡 Mid | 🟡 Mid | 🔴 Expensive |
| PET-CT | 🔴 More expensive | ✅ Cheap | ✅ Cheap | 🔴 Expensive |
Two conclusions that matter:
- China’s real advantage is advanced imaging and endoscopy — MRI, CT, gastroscopy, colonoscopy. That is where the price gap is wide enough to justify a flight.
- For a basic checkup, Indonesia is cheaper than China. And for PET-CT, Indonesia is also cheaper. Flying to China for those does not make financial sense on price alone.
We are a business that helps people travel to China for medical care. We are telling you that some of those trips are not worth it. That is the point of this article.
What this article does not cover
This page is about scans and scopes. We have since checked the other categories too, and the picture is not uniform, so do not read “China is cheap” across the board:
| Category | Verdict |
|---|---|
| MRI, CT, endoscopy | ✅ China is cheaper — this article |
| Prescription drugs (oncology especially) | ✅ China is far cheaper — a different order of magnitude. Why |
| Proton and heavy-ion therapy | ✅ Available in China; not available in most of Southeast Asia |
| Routine surgery (hernia, joint replacement, cardiac bypass) | ❌ Not cheaper. Indonesian private hospitals overlap or beat Chinese prices |
| Cataract surgery | ❌ Not cheaper at the entry level |
| Basic checkup, PET-CT | ❌ Indonesia is cheaper |
Prices below are published list prices as of October 2026. They change. Verify before you commit.
Exchange rates used
| Currency | Rate |
|---|---|
| 1 USD | ≈ 7.1 CNY |
| 1 USD | ≈ 18,000 IDR |
| 1 USD | ≈ 4.09 MYR |
| 1 USD | ≈ 1.28 SGD |
Sources: Trading Economics (USD/IDR 18,043 on 20 Oct 2026), published interbank rates, October 2026. Rupiah has weakened about 8.7% against the dollar over the past 12 months — this materially changes the comparison versus a year ago.
MRI — China’s clearest win
MRI is where the gap is largest and the case for travel is strongest.
| Country | Price (local) | Approx. USD | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| China (public tertiary) | ¥400 – 1,200 | $56 – 169 | Public hospital pricing, Oct 2026 |
| Indonesia (private) | Rp1,500,000 – 6,000,000 | $83 – 333 | Halodoc |
| Malaysia (private) | RM800 – 3,500 | $196 – 857 | KL Sports & Spine, Health365 |
| Singapore (private) | S$900 – 1,200 | $704 – 939 | Mediway, Health365 |
Indonesian hospital MRI prices, by hospital (published list, October 2026):
| Hospital | Range (IDR) | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| Siloam Hospitals | 1,100,000 – 5,000,000 | $61 – 278 |
| Mayapada | 2,200,000 – 3,500,000 | $122 – 194 |
| EKA Hospital | 2,350,000 – 3,500,000 | $131 – 194 |
| Columbia Asia | ~3,200,000 | ~$178 |
| Primaya | from 3,000,000 | from $167 |
| Mitra Keluarga (head MRI) | 3,500,000 – 4,635,000 | $194 – 258 |
What to notice: the cheap end of Indonesian pricing (Siloam at Rp1.1M ≈ $61) is close to the Chinese range. The expensive end (Rp5–6M ≈ $280–333) is five times the Chinese price for the same scan.
So the comparison is not “China vs Indonesia.” It is “which Indonesian hospital, versus which Chinese hospital.”
The field strength problem — read this before you book
Not all MRIs are the same machine. A 1.5T scanner and a 3.0T scanner produce different image quality, and the 3.0T matters for small structures, neuroimaging, and prostate imaging.
- Most Indonesian private hospital listings we checked quote 1.5T pricing
- Chinese public tertiary hospitals commonly have both 1.5T and 3.0T; the price band above spans both
- A cheap MRI on a 1.5T scanner may be entirely adequate — or not, depending on what is being looked for
What to do: ask for the field strength of the machine in writing, on both sides of the comparison. A price comparison that ignores field strength is not a comparison.
The other cost nobody counts
An MRI in Jakarta on a Monday and an MRI in Guangzhou next month are not the same product:
- Wait time at home: days to weeks (Jakarta private), and Indonesian private hospitals generally offer prompt scheduling
- Wait time in China: typically days, but requires booking through the international department or an app
- Flight: Rp4–8 million round trip from Jakarta to Guangzhou or Shanghai
- Hotel, food, transport: Rp1.5–3 million for 3 days
- Visa or visa-free documentation
The break-even: if the Indonesian price for your scan is Rp5,000,000 ($278) and the Chinese price is ¥1,000 ($141), you save $137 on the scan and spend roughly $400–700 getting there. You lose money.
Where it flips: if you need several scans, or a scan plus an endoscopy plus specialist consultations, the savings stack. That is when travel starts to pay.
Endoscopy — China’s second win
| Procedure | China | Indonesia | Malaysia | Singapore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gastroscopy (sedated) | ¥900 – 1,800 $127 – 254 | Rp2,500,000 – 5,000,000+ $139 – 278+ | — | — |
| Colonoscopy (sedated) | ¥1,200 – 2,500 $169 – 352 | Rp3,500,000 – 12,000,000 $194 – 667 | — | — |
Sources: China — public hospital pricing; Indonesia — Halodoc (June 2026), Alodokter, Primaya Hospital published packages (Rp5.35–7.4M for combined endoscopy + colonoscopy).
The gap is real but narrower than for MRI. At the low end of Indonesian pricing they are comparable. At the high end (Rp12M ≈ $667 for a colonoscopy), China is roughly half.
One important caveat: gastroscopy and colonoscopy in China are often done with sedation optional. Non-sedated gastroscopy is significantly cheaper (¥400–800) and common practice — but it is uncomfortable. Confirm which you are being quoted.
PET-CT — where China is NOT cheaper
This is the finding that surprised us, and it contradicts most medical travel marketing.
| Country | Price | Approx. USD |
|---|---|---|
| Indonesia | Rp10,900,000 – 17,500,000 | $605 – 972 |
| Malaysia | from RM1,800 (promotional) | from ~$440 |
| China | ¥4,500 – 9,500 | $634 – 1,338 |
| Thailand | THB 58,000 (Bangkok Hospital, package) | ~$1,700 |
Sources: Indonesia — RS Kanker Dharmais (Rp12.65M, Oct 2026), RS Mandaya Royal Puri (Rp14.25M standard room), EMC Grha Kedoya (Rp17.5M standard room); China — published Grade 3A hospital rates, reported range varies by source; Malaysia — published promotional pricing; Thailand — Bangkok Hospital published package valid to 31 Dec 2026.
Indonesia’s PET-CT pricing overlaps and in places beats China’s. Dharmais at Rp12.65 million is about $700. That is at or below the mid-range of the Chinese band.
And Indonesia has a domestic cancer centre doing this at published prices. For a patient in Jakarta, flying to China for a PET-CT is very hard to justify.
When PET-CT travel does make sense: if you need it as part of a larger treatment pathway — staging plus surgery, or a therapy only available in China. Not for the scan alone.
⚠️ One warning about PET-CT pricing everywhere: promotional PET-CT prices are frequently for a limited acquisition protocol or exclude the radiologist’s interpretation, contrast, or a follow-up consultation. Always ask what is included.
Health checkup — Indonesia wins
This is the second place where the common marketing claim is simply wrong.
| Package | China | Indonesia |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | ¥500 – 1,200 $70 – 169 | Rp400,000 – 800,000 $22 – 44 |
| Standard / mid | ¥1,200 – 2,500 $169 – 352 | Rp1,000,000 – 2,500,000 $56 – 139 |
| Executive | — | Rp1,900,000 ~$105 |
Sources: China — public tertiary hospital package pricing; Indonesia — Primaya Hospital published packages, Halodoc, EKA Hospital (Standard 2026 package from Rp990,000, 18 tests).
A basic checkup in Indonesia costs roughly a quarter of the Chinese equivalent. Even an executive package with more tests comes in below the Chinese standard tier.
The honest read: for a routine annual checkup, stay home. The flight alone costs more than the entire checkup in either country.
What Indonesia does not include at that price: low-dose chest CT, sedated endoscopy, or advanced imaging. Those are add-ons, and that is where the comparison shifts — see the sections above.
So when is the trip actually worth it?
| Scenario | Does travel make economic sense? |
|---|---|
| MRI alone | 🟡 Marginal. Only if your local quote is at the high end |
| MRI + gastroscopy + colonoscopy + specialist consultations | ✅ Yes. The savings stack; one trip, several procedures |
| Basic annual checkup | 🔴 No. Cheaper at home, and the flight costs more than the checkup |
| PET-CT alone | 🔴 No, if you are in Indonesia. Cheaper at home |
| PET-CT as part of a treatment pathway | 🟡 Depends on where the treatment is available |
| Complex imaging your local hospital cannot do | ✅ Yes |
| A therapy only available in China | ✅ Yes — but that is a different article |
The pattern: the trip pays when you stack multiple procedures into one visit, or when you need something your country simply does not have. It does not pay for a single routine test.
What we charge, and why that matters here
We sell a Medical Trip Assessment at USD 250, flat fee.
This article is the reason that product exists. Working out whether a trip is worth it requires comparing itemized prices across four countries, checking field strengths and what is included in packages, and doing the arithmetic against flight and hotel costs. That is several hours of work.
We take no money from hospitals. So when the arithmetic says “stay home,” we can say so — and we have, twice, in this article.
We do not give medical advice and we do not tell you what to treat. We tell you what things cost and what the trip involves. Your doctor decides what you need.
